הבודהיזם החל לצבור כוח בהודו במאה השישית
לפני הספירה, ובמאה השלישית לפני הספירה אומץ כדת רשמית. הבודהיזם, כאוסף רעיונות ואורח חיים דתי הופץ בעל פה באמצעות הסוחרים והנוסעים השונים בדרכי המשי וכך הגיע לסין ושכנותיה.
כל האזור החל להתמלא יצירות אמנות, כתבי יד, מונומנטים מרשימים ומבנים מקודשים בודהיסטיים.
